STARTING PAY: $9.00/hr
Under the direct supervision of the Visitor Services Specialist, this position assists the Zookeeper II- Educator with teaching and supervising children participating in zoo summer camp programs and other educational activities during the summer. This position will require considerable interaction with the general public and children ages 6-12, including public presentations and assisting with craft activities and group games. This position also requires some interaction with animals and assisting with other tasks including gift shop and special events.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Assist with teaching and conducting a variety of public and group programs including summer camp, wildlife shows, and other programs.
- Practice effective interpretive techniques, present accurate information, encourage visitor participation, and assist with visitor needs.
- Provide assistance to zoo volunteers in educational presentations.
- Engage in creative, age-appropriate, and responsibly managed activities with program participants in camps and other educational services.
- Handle animals for programs and camps when needed (necessary training provided).
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
- Experience delivering presentations to a variety of audiences preferred.
- Work or volunteer experience working with children preferred.
- Experiences working directly with animals preferred (reptiles, amphibians, birds invertebrates, small mammals).
- Should be proficient with Microsoft Office and Outlook.
- Must be flexible, self-motivated, a team player and able to work with volunteers.
- Availability to work weekdays, weekends, and other irregular hours to support programmatic needs.
- Ability to operate a variety of equipment including a two-way radio, computer, telephone, and the like.
- Ability to read and write.
